### Knock background

At Frame.io, the most common complaint from unhappy users was that the product sent too many notifications. Sam and Chris built batching, digests, and better email threading to fix it, and learned how much infrastructure sits behind a good notification. They started Knock in 2021 so other teams wouldn't have to build that system themselves.

In 2024, Knock raised a $12M Series A led by Craft Ventures, bringing total funding to $18M. Today Knock has 11-50 employees and its headquarters in New York.

**Sam Seely, co-founder and CEO.** Sam leads Knock as CEO and sets the company's direction across product, operations, and go-to-market. Before Knock, he worked with Chris at Frame.io, where they built the notification system that led them to start the company.

**Christopher Bell, co-founder and CTO.** Chris leads engineering and guides Knock's technical direction as CTO, including the APIs, infrastructure, and developer tools teams use to build and run messaging. He worked with Sam at Frame.io before they founded Knock.

### Core product offerings

* **Workflows**: Workflows turn events in a product into cross-channel messages, with steps for batching, delays, throttling, branching, and fetching data. Teams model that logic once and reuse it across every channel and provider.
* **Broadcasts**: Broadcasts send one-time messages, such as product announcements, pricing changes, and terms of service updates, through the same engine as workflows. Target an audience, reuse existing templates, and follow up on a second channel based on how each recipient engaged.
* **Guides**: Guides power in-app messages, including banners, modals, changelogs, and upgrade nudges, rendered with a product's own components. Engineers keep control of design and performance. Product and growth teams target and launch messages from the dashboard.
* **Preferences**: Preferences give each recipient control over which messages they receive and on which channels. Enterprise teams can set branding and preferences per tenant.
* **Agents**: Agents build, run, and improve messaging from the dashboard, Slack, Claude, Cursor, and other tools. The Agent Toolkit, Knock CLI, Management API, and MCP server expose the same resources as the dashboard.
* **Observability**: Knock logs every API request, workflow run, and message, so teams can trace a message from trigger to delivery. Engagement analytics show what recipients do next. Enterprise teams can stream that data to a warehouse or Datadog.
* **Template management**: An editor for dynamic messaging templates shared by engineering, product, and marketing.
* **User segmentation**: Build audiences from user attributes, events, and relations, then target workflows, broadcasts, and guides to the people who should receive them.
* **Cross-channel delivery**: Deliver messages across email, in-app, push, SMS, Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, and webhooks from one workflow.

### Integrations

Knock sends email, SMS, push, in-app, Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, and webhook messages through more than 25 delivery providers. Teams keep the providers they already use and add a channel without changing how the product triggers messages.

* **Email**: SendGrid, Postmark, Amazon SES, Mailjet, Mailgun, Mailtrap, MailerSend, Mandrill, Sparkpost, and Resend
* **SMS**: Twilio, Amazon SNS, Telnyx, Plivo, MessageBird, Africa's Talking, Vonage, Sinch, and MessageMedia
* **Mobile push**: Apple Push (APNS), Firebase FCM, Expo, and OneSignal
* **Chat apps**: SlackKit, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, and Discord
* **In-app messaging**: Knock feeds and Knock guides
* **Authentication**: Clerk, WorkOS, and Auth0
* **Analytics**: LaunchDarkly, PostHog, Amplitude, and Heap
* **Observability**: Sentry, Checkly, Dash0, Datadog, and New Relic
* **Customer data**: Segment, Rudderstack, Polytomic, Jitsu, Freshpaint, Hightouch, Census, and Clay
* **Billing**: Stripe, Orb, and Shopify
* **Productivity**: Linear, Jira, and GitHub
* **Infrastructure**: Neon, Supabase, Mux, MongoDB, and Vercel

For the full list, see [knock.app/integrations](https://knock.app/integrations).

### Developer features

* **Knock CLI**: Manage workflows, templates, and other resources from the terminal. Changes land as commits you can review.
* **Management API**: Create and update workflows and templates through an API, using the same resources as the dashboard.
* **MCP server**: Connect Knock to AI assistants so agents in Claude Code, Cursor, or Slack can build and update messaging.
* **Schema validation**: Validate trigger data before a workflow runs.
* **Environments**: Test changes in a development environment and promote them to production.
* **SDKs**: Trigger a workflow from a backend with a single API call. Self-serve and Enterprise teams use the same docs, SDKs, and example apps.

### AI features

Knock's AI features cover two jobs: agents that build and operate your messaging, and agents that run inside a workflow to decide and personalize what a recipient gets. Both use the Agent Toolkit.

* **Agents that manage Knock**: Create, edit, and ship workflows, templates, guides, broadcasts, and audiences from the dashboard, Slack, Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and Codex.
* **MCP server**: Knock's remote MCP server lets an assistant manage those resources. The Cursor plugin connects through that server, and the same server connects from Claude or ChatGPT.
* **Skills**: Pre-built skills help agents build onboarding sequences, improve copy across channels, and identify growth opportunities.
* **Custom instructions**: Apply a style guide and company context so agents follow how your team writes.
* **Agents inside workflows**: Run an AI agent as a workflow step to qualify users, enrich profiles, personalize a message, update properties, and segment recipients.
* **Prompts and response schemas**: Draft a prompt with AI or start from a template. A response schema keeps each agent's output consistent and ready for the next step.

### What makes Knock different

* **Infrastructure, not another sending API**: Delivery providers send a message. Knock owns the orchestration, recipient state, preferences, batching, and logs around that send. Teams keep the providers they already use.
* **Product, lifecycle, and transactional messaging in one system**: Customer engagement platforms such as Braze and Customer.io center on campaigns that marketing teams run. Knock starts from developer APIs and event-driven workflows, then adds broadcasts, guides, and audiences, so product, growth, and engineering teams work from the same data and templates.
* **Built for agents and code review**: The Knock CLI, Management API, and MCP server expose the same resources as the dashboard. Agents in Claude Code, Cursor, or Slack can build and update messaging. Every change lands as a commit you can review, test in a development environment, and promote to production.
* **A data model for multi-tenant B2B products**: Users, objects, and tenants are core concepts. Send messages to non-user recipients such as Slack channels, scope preferences to a tenant, and brand messages per customer.

### Trust and production

* Knock runs at 99.99% uptime.
* Knock delivers hundreds of millions of messages per month for companies such as Vercel, Webflow, and Zapier.
* Knock is SOC 2 Type II certified.
* Enterprise plans offer HIPAA business associate agreements, SAML SSO, and SCIM.
